About Business Operations

The Office of Business Operations is led by James J. Lyphout, vice president for business operations, who reports to the executive vice president, John Affleck-Graves. The division generated new efficiencies this year through a reorganization that realigned several reporting structures and combined areas of similar impact. The Office of Business Operations includes many of the administrative organizations at the university that support Notre Dame’s academic mission. The division is organized into the following areas:

Office of Sustainability

Bob Zerr was named Interim Director of Sustainability in September 2009. Prior to his appointment, Zerr served as the Director of Risk Management and Safety in Administrative Services. Zerr has served in several Business Operations positions during his tenure at Notre Dame and was an original member of the Environmental Issues Committee created in June 1990. Administrative Services

Administrative Services Amy Coughlin has been recently named the director of administrative services. She will head the University’s warehouse and delivery services, which includes central receiving, building services, general services, and mail distribution. Administrative Services also manages transportation services, risk management and safety, and international facilities. Additionally, this division oversees budgetary responsibilities, staff training and development, special projects, and technological functions such as ND Marketplace, the credit card support program, data security, and the campus work station program.

Auxiliary and Facility Operations

This new division, under the direction of David Harr, combines a subset of activities from the former Facilities Operations unit—namely, custodial services, locksmith services, landscape services, and the sign shop—with the Auxiliary Services unit’s management of the Morris Inn, Cedar Grove Cemetery, McKenna Hall, Food Services, St. Michael’s Laundry, and the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore.

Office of the University Architect

Challenges of maintaining older buildings often require the input of architects. Visit the Office of the University Architect

Utilities Department

Activities relevant to the supply of power, water, heat, and air conditioning to campus facilities are now consolidated under the direction of Paul Kempf. They span the spectrum from generation of power to maintenance of distribution systems. The preventive maintenance function has moved here from Facilities Operations. Visit the Utilities Department

Asset Management

This operation continues to play a leading role in the revitalization of the Northeast Neighborhood adjacent to the Notre Dame campus, with responsibilities that include the Eddy Street Corridor development. Greg Hakanen will continue to manage visiting faculty housing, rental property management, and commercial leasing.
